Kiddieland Testing Park Exhibit

kiddieland-planes-and-museumsThough it’s been a longer-than-anticipated road, the Kiddieland Testing Park Exhibit is finally completed. With beautiful landscaping, protective covered structures, and helicopters gleaming on their concrete pad, it’s easy to imagine your children running, laughing, and riding in the summer sun.

Fun by land, air or sea!

The goal of this exhibit is to interpret a major part of the Allan Herschell Company’s later history. Though hand-carved carrousels were a mainstay of the company for decades, by the 1950s small metal rides for children had become the top seller. While the Thompson Street factory was never an amusement park per se, the company did test each ride before it was shipped out, often inviting neighborhood kids in for a free ride. The Kiddieland Testing Park Exhibit is bringing this history to life for the grandchildren and great grandchildren of those original riders.

The rides consist of miniature cars and fire engines; a horse and pony cart; helicopters that lift into the sky; and floating boats. Many of the rides feature interactive elements, such as steering wheels, bells to ring, and height controls.
